New Year in Marrakech in a private house

Private houses in Marrakech for New Year's Eve are booked in September and October, sometimes as early as the summer. Start looking in late November and what is left is what nobody wanted. It is the tightest period of the year in this market, ahead of the Easter holidays.

That is the constraint. The rest is about working out whether it is worth it for you.

What you will actually get, in December

Look at the figures before the photos.

Days averaging a high of 20.1 degrees, with 7.3 hours of sun a day. Mild, bright, perfect for walking.
Nights at 7.3 degrees, and a monthly record of minus 1.6. Frost is rare but possible, above all outside the medina.
24 millimetres of rain across 4 days in the month. It does not rain much, but it rains.
The water in an unheated pool hovers around 13 degrees. It is decorative.

That last point is what produces the disappointed reviews. A listing that leads with a pool photo for a stay from 28 December to 2 January is selling something that does not exist. Our pool is not heated and we write that everywhere: in December, it is there to look at.

What counts in this period is indoor heating. Check there is some in every bedroom, not just in the living room. It is the first subject of winter comments, far ahead of anything else.

Why the prices climb so hard

Three sources of demand land on the same fifteen days.

European guests are after sun three hours away by plane with no real time difference. Moroccan guests from the big cities come down for the school holidays. And the market for large party villas, the ones that take 30 people with caterers and a DJ, absorbs the high end inventory and pulls everything else up with it.

On flights, the averages on record give 124 euros return in January, the cheapest month, against 306 in August and 290 in April. New Year's Eve sits at the top of the range, and booking four weeks out no longer cuts it.

One figure came from a guest in October 2025, in a review we left online: she wanted to come back in February and found it "almost 300 euros more expensive for the same number of days". She looked elsewhere. That is how the market works, not an exception.

Private house or riad, for New Year's Eve

The private house wins if you are a formed group who want to eat together, cook, make noise without bothering anyone, and go to bed when they feel like it. A whole house for six divides by six, while three riad bedrooms are paid for by the room and breakfast by the head.

The medina riad wins if you want to go out on foot on the 31st, get back at three in the morning without driving, and be inside the buzz of the city. That is a real argument: the question of the car on the way home from a New Year's party is not a small one, and you do not drive at night in Morocco in good conditions.

If you take a house beyond the walls for the 31st, settle the return journey before you book: a driver for the evening, or dinner at home.

What actually happens on the 31st in Marrakech

The Gregorian New Year is not a traditional Moroccan celebration. What exists is essentially a tourist market: gala dinners in riads and hotels, villa parties, dinner shows with fantasia on the outskirts, and Jemaa el-Fna carrying on being Jemaa el-Fna, only denser.

Dinner shows of the Chez Ali kind know exactly what they are: 800 to 1,500 covers, service on a production line, a show run to the clock. It is not a scam, it is a product for coach parties. It disappoints anyone who came looking for authenticity, and it delights families with children who know what they came to see.

Book everything that can be booked. On the 31st, medina restaurants sell out weeks ahead and run set menus.

And one thing you will not be told elsewhere: the week after 2 January is one of the best of the year. Same weather, same light, nobody there, and prices that drop off a cliff. If school dates are not holding you, shift a week later.

A word about the 31st here

Dar Djinou is not a party villa. It is a house for six people in a lived in village, with neighbours ten metres away. Quiet stays are the norm here, and the reviews bear that out: the word that keeps coming back is "peaceful".

If your plan is a New Year's party with caterers and a sound system until four in the morning, this is not the right place, and we would rather tell you here than on the doorstep. If your plan is six people around a table, a tagine, the roof terrace and silence after midnight, it is exactly what the house is good at.
